Iran today announced it is reviewing a new proposal from the United States. Earlier, sources indicated that U.S. and Iranian authorities were close to reaching a one-page memorandum aimed at ending the war between the two countries in the Persian Gulf region, but would defer thorny issues such as Iran's nuclear program.
According to Reuters, U.S. news outlet Axios first reported that the U.S. and Iran are discussing a one-page, 14-point memorandum aimed at formally ending the war. A Pakistani source and another individual familiar with the mediation efforts have confirmed this news.
These sources indicated that the memorandum would subsequently lead to negotiations covering issues such as the resumption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of U.S. sanctions against Iran, and an agreement on restrictions for Iran's nuclear program.
U.S. President Trump stated that Iran wishes to negotiate; the Pakistani source further stated: "We will finalize this soon. We are close."
The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reported that an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson indicated that Tehran would soon convey its response through Pakistan. (Compiled by: Chen Cheng-chien) 1150507
