(Central News Agency reporter Kuan Jui-ping, Miaoli County, May 6th) Two fallen tree incidents occurred in Miaoli County in one day, injuring people and vehicles. In Toufen City, a motorcyclist surnamed Tsai was crushed by a collapsed tree on his way home from work and remains in critical condition after being sent to the hospital for emergency treatment; in Yuanli Township, a large tree near the library also collapsed, crushing one car and four motorcycles.
According to the Miaoli County Police Bureau's Toufen Precinct today, on May 5th, they received a report from the public that a roadside tree had collapsed on Section 1, Xinglong Road, Toufen City, affecting a motorcyclist. Upon arrival, the police found that Mr. Tsai (39 years old), while riding a heavy motorcycle eastward on Section 1, Xinglong Road, encountered a sudden collapse of a roadside tree, was unable to avoid it, fell, and was injured. The police notified an ambulance, and he was immediately sent to the hospital for treatment.
Nearby residents stated that they saw the motorcyclist and his vehicle pinned under the tree at the time. After the rider climbed out on his own, his face was facing the ground. When fire and rescue personnel arrived at the scene, the patient still had breathing, but then lost consciousness. Rescue personnel called out to him multiple times without response, and he also had bleeding from his mouth.
The Miaoli County Fire Bureau stated that the injured person had traumatic OHCA (out-of-hospital cardiac arrest), a laceration of about 3 cm on the head, and multiple abrasions on the limbs. CPR and other emergency treatments were immediately given, and he was transferred to Weigong Hospital. He regained breathing and heartbeat before arriving at the hospital and has now been transferred to China Medical University Hospital for further treatment.
In addition, a large Banyan tree, about 50 years old, in front of the Yuanli Township Library also collapsed on the evening of May 5th, damaging one car and four motorcycles parked in an adjacent parking lot. Nearby residents pointed out that the large Banyan tree had shown signs of tilting during a typhoon several years ago, and someone was hired to straighten it then. However, this time the tree roots were almost completely uprooted, and another nearby large tree is also in precarious condition.
Miaoli County Councilor Chang Ku-li stated that it might be due to the monsoon season, with excessive water content in the branches and leaves, coupled with ongoing construction nearby, which loosened the soil, causing the collapse due to insufficient support. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident. As the two large Banyan trees near the library have many years of history and have accompanied locals as they grew up, some even regard them as 'tree gods.' Therefore, the workers who came to clear the trees this morning were particularly careful and first burned paper money to worship and pray for peace.
The Miaoli County Fire Bureau stated that after this frontal system passed, rainfall has slowed down today, and various places have gradually cleared up. However, continuous rainfall for several days has resulted in high soil moisture content, which can easily lead to rockfalls, landslides, or fallen tree accidents. They reminded the public to always pay attention to road conditions when going out and avoid going to mountainous areas unless necessary to ensure personal safety. (Edited by Lee Heng-shan) 1150506
