(Central News Agency reporter Tseng Yi-ning, Taipei, May 6) Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) and the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) are working together to promote the "Saint Kitts and Nevis Mental Health Service System Strengthening Project." The TVGH team recently traveled to the local grassroots and clinical front lines for investigation, consolidating the foundation for cooperation between the two sides and demonstrating the spirit of "Taiwan Can Help."

Taipei Veterans General Hospital and the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) jointly launched a three-year "Saint Kitts and Nevis Mental Health Service System Strengthening Project" in July 2024, which is Taiwan's first mental health cooperation project with a diplomatic ally.

TVGH stated today via a press release that Dr. Chen Mu-hung, Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department, and attending physician Dr. Huang Hsiang-hsuan from the Department of Psychiatry, traveled to the diplomatic ally Saint Kitts and Nevis from April 18 to 27 this year to conduct an on-site investigation for the mental health promotion project.

TVGH pointed out that Chen Mu-hung and Huang Hsiang-hsuan also paid a visit to Prime Minister and Minister of Health Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts on April 24. They reported in detail their observations from the field investigation and provided professional advice on the development and care system for mental health among the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

TVGH stated that Drew expressed high support and constructive responses for the dedication and professionalism of the Taiwanese medical team, demonstrating great importance attached to the cooperation between the two sides. After the meeting, the two doctors also exchanged views with officials from the Saint Kitts Ministry of Health regarding their week-long field observations, ensuring that future policy implementation can be more aligned with local needs.

During the visit, Chen Mu-hung and Huang Hsiang-hsuan also delved into the grassroots and clinical front lines. TVGH explained that they visited psychiatric wards, psychiatric day care centers, and mental health and wellness centers on both Saint Kitts and Nevis islands. They also personally supervised several workshops led by local seed teachers on topics such as "de-stigmatization," "bipolar disorder," and "depression," confirming that the seed teachers have fully grasped and correctly conveyed the learned content.

In addition, Chen Mu-hung also organized an educational lecture focusing on mental health issues of high local concern, such as "youth suicide, autism, and emotional regulation difficulties," attracting over 60 local medical, educational, and psychological professionals.

TVGH stated that the field investigation by the psychiatric medical delegation successfully consolidated the foundation for cooperation between the two sides in the field of mental health. Furthermore, through professional medical advice and substantive high-level diplomatic interactions, it once again demonstrated Taiwan's concrete contributions and medical soft power with the spirit of "Taiwan Can Help."
