(Washington D.C., May 5th, Comprehensive Foreign Report by Central News Agency) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet with US President Donald Trump on the 7th. White House officials stated that this will be the second meeting between the two leaders whose relationship has seen ups and downs in the past.

According to AFP, the official told AFP today on condition of anonymity, "President Trump will host President Lula for a working visit this Thursday (7th). The two sides will discuss economic and security issues of mutual importance."

Earlier, sources from the Brazilian presidential palace also told AFP that a meeting between the two was very likely.

Trump and Lula had only met once before, last year in Malaysia, and a second meeting originally scheduled for earlier this year in Washington did not materialize.

Lula, 80, and Trump, 79, hold vastly different positions on issues such as multilateralism, international trade, and climate change.

After their previous meeting in Malaysia, bilateral relations briefly warmed, and Washington subsequently lifted punitive tariffs on Brazil.

However, Lula has frankly criticized the Trump administration, opposing many of America's actions, from the overthrow of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the war in Iran.

Trump, on the other hand, is an important ally of the imprisoned former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, whose eldest son, Flavio Bolsonaro, is seen as Lula's main opponent in the October presidential election. (Compiler: Cai Jiamin) 1150506
