(Keelung, May 6, CNA reporter Wang Chao-yu) Discussions have recently arisen regarding the second phase of the Keelung MRT, from Badu to Keelung city center. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Keelung mayoral candidate Tong Tze-wei advocates for a "dual main line," planning routes along the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) corridor into the city center and simultaneously through the Anle District, though the Anle District route would not extend towards the city center.
After announcing his youth employment policy this morning, Tong Tze-wei was interviewed and stated that the Keelung City Government's proposal is a fantasy. He questioned how many houses and spaces would be available for construction on a route from Makkin Road through the old Anle District into the city center. He acknowledged that technically, constructing a tunnel from Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital through the old Anle District and then a tunnel would not be an engineering problem.
Tong Tze-wei pointed out that if one were to wait for the environmental assessment, demolition, and urban renewal to be completed, a lot would need to be done during the process. He conceded that the city government can have a vision, but "we are not playing video games, not playing SimCity." Keelung needs a route with implementable possibilities.
Tong Tze-wei stated that for the second phase, in addition to the route along the TRA corridor into the city center, a Keelung MRT route for the Anle District would be planned simultaneously, but not in the direction of the city center. He added that he would present a complete MRT policy in the future, explaining a clear, visionary, and implementable plan to the citizens.
Yesterday, the City Government's Department of Transportation stated that the Anle District Makkin Road proposal for the second phase of the Keelung MRT was the best option after evaluation by a professional team using multi-criteria assessment. It confirmed the engineering feasibility of laying the route via tunnels and aims to prioritize the greatest public interest by primarily utilizing public land and existing road space.
