(Central News Agency reporter Hao Hsueh-Ching, Taichung, 6th) A banyan tree on the sidewalk of Yinghsi Road in North District, Taichung City, fell this morning, damaging two vehicles parked on the roadside. The police arrived at the scene to control traffic. As the tree's ownership belongs to Taichung Second High School, the school stated that its public liability insurance will compensate the affected car owners.
Taichung City Police Department Second Precinct explained that at about 7:34 AM, they received a report of a roadside tree falling and crushing vehicles on Yinghsi Road in front of Taichung Second High School, and immediately dispatched police forces to the scene. It was understood that the banyan tree might have fallen due to loosened soil caused by continuous rain in recent days, resulting in damage to two parked cars. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Police stated that upon arrival, they immediately set up traffic cones and implemented traffic control and diversion, guiding traffic to alternative routes, effectively maintaining traffic order at the scene and avoiding congestion during peak commuting hours. At the same time, relevant responsible units were notified to assist in the handling, and traffic control was lifted after the fallen roadside tree was cleared. Overall traffic remained smooth during the control period.
As the fallen roadside tree's responsibility belongs to Taichung Second High School, Principal Ou Ching-Yu of Taichung Second High School stated that the sidewalk section is an extension of the school's land, so the school allocates a budget for the maintenance of the roadside trees. For the damage caused to the two vehicles, the school's public liability insurance will provide compensation.
Ou Ching-Yu pointed out that the General Affairs Office had planned a simple inspection of the roadside trees last year, but banyan trees are relatively uncertain. With continuous rain in recent days, the soil softened, causing the roadside tree to fall. Subsequent inspections will be conducted on other roadside trees. (Editor: Chang Ya-Ching) 1150506
