(Central News Agency reporter Chang Chi, Hualien County, 6th) The Daqingshui Tunnel on Taiwan's Provincial Highway 9, Su-Hua Highway, has been damaged by rockfalls and landslides in recent years. Coupled with strong earthquakes and successive typhoons, two gullies have formed on the upper slope due to landslides. At the end of last month, during the restoration period, the tunnel's roof panel was again damaged by falling rocks. The Highway Bureau will implement traffic control from today until June 30 for the reconstruction work.

Liu Chin-lung, head of the Nanao Maintenance Section, Eastern Region Branch Office of the Highway Bureau, told the Central News Agency that the upper slope south of the Daqingshui Tunnel developed gullies due to collapsed earth and rock after the April 3rd earthquake. After several typhoons, gullies were recently also found on the north side, with accumulated earth and rock above potentially cascading onto the tunnel at any time.

Liu Chin-lung said that tunnels are not afraid of earth accumulation, but are more concerned about rocks falling from high places and directly hitting the tunnel, which can easily cause the tunnel to be punctured and damaged, leading to traffic disruptions on the Su-Hua Highway.

He stated that considering the large volume of accumulated earth and rock on the upper slope after the disaster, which cannot be processed, and in order to strengthen the tunnel's resilience before the flood season, a three-phase construction approach of clearing, restoration, and reinforcement was adopted. At the end of last month, towards the end of the restoration project, the temporary reinforced tunnel roof panel at 159.4k was damaged by falling rocks.

He added that currently, in addition to repairing according to the original schedule, the tunnel's strength will be reinforced after repairs, with earth piled on top of the tunnel to increase buffering. Furthermore, a curtain-type rockfall protection net is planned to be installed approximately 50 meters above the slope to reduce the impact energy of falling rocks.

The Eastern Region Branch Office stated that in conjunction with the Daqingshui Tunnel reconstruction project, mobile single-lane alternating traffic control will be implemented from today until June 30, from 7 AM to 6 PM. There will be no control on holidays and consecutive holidays. (Edited by Lee Heng-shan) 1150506
