The Ministry of the Interior (MOI) announced that in alignment with the national 2050 net-zero emissions goal, it is actively deploying solar energy infrastructure. By identifying potential sites within its jurisdiction, the ministry has prioritized sewage treatment and reclaimed water plants as demonstration locations. Currently, 37 sewage treatment plants have completed solar installations, with a total capacity of 14.35 megawatts (MW) and an annual power generation of approximately 18.33 million kWh.
During a meeting of the ''Climate Change and Net-Zero Transition Task Force'' held by the Executive Yuan today, MOI Secretary-General Huang Chun-yi stated that the ministry is accelerating green energy deployment and refining related systems. Beyond building rooftops, solar panels are being installed over treatment tanks to maximize usable sunlight area. Another 13 plants have been identified for new or expanded capacity, potentially adding 2.95 MW.
Regarding geothermal development, Huang emphasized a cautious approach for national parks to protect the environment and landscape. Additionally, the MOI issued standards requiring new or renovated buildings over 1,000 square meters to install a specific capacity of solar equipment starting in 2025. By leading through public sector initiatives and regulatory optimization, the ministry aims to drive private investment toward the 2050 net-zero target.
