(Central News Agency reporter Tsao Ya-yen, New Taipei, 6th) Last June, logistics driver Xu Yu-ching stabbed his colleague to death. After deliberation by citizen judges at the New Taipei District Court, it was determined that Xu Yu-ching brutally murdered his colleague with whom he had no prior grievances, and could not provide a reasonable motive or purpose for the crime. Today, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and permanent deprivation of civil rights.

According to the New Taipei District Court's press release, Xu Yu-ching and Chen were both drivers for Black Cat Takkyubin's Linkou factory. On the morning of June 30 last year, Xu Yu-ching kicked Chen at the company entrance, then pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Chen in the neck. He then straddled Chen and repeatedly stabbed him in the neck and chest, causing Chen to bleed profusely and die after being sent to the hospital.

After three days of deliberation by citizen judges at the New Taipei District Court, the collegiate panel pointed out that Xu Yu-ching, without a reasonable motive or purpose, had developed an intent to kill Chen two days before the incident, indicating premeditated murder and firm criminal intent, and the means of the crime were brutal and violent.

In addition, the collegiate panel believed that Xu Yu-ching and Chen were merely colleagues with no prior grievances, and there was no conflict between them before the incident. However, Xu Yu-ching easily deprived Chen of his life, which not only caused indelible spiritual trauma to the family but also posed a significant danger to public safety and order.

The collegiate panel also considered that the results of the psychiatric evaluation showed that Xu Yu-ching might suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and long-term drug use had affected his physical and mental health. He often appeared irritable and aggressive in interactions with others, meeting the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder, which easily leads to violence and self-harm.

The collegiate panel stated that Xu Yu-ching had been a logistics driver for over nine years with no prior criminal record, but family members and colleagues had stated that Xu Yu-ching usually had a bad temper and had once fought with a security guard at a delivery location. Furthermore, Xu Yu-ching himself stated that he had wanted to kill colleagues due to interpersonal problems and had purchased knives but had not acted on it, indicating a certain danger to society. If he were not sentenced to a longer period of imprisonment, it would be difficult to help reduce the risk of recidivism.

The collegiate panel considered that although Xu Yu-ching admitted his crime and showed remorse after the incident, he has not yet reached a settlement with Chen's family or obtained their forgiveness, and has been unable to provide a reasonable motive or purpose from beginning to end. Therefore, his attitude after the crime is not considered good, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder under the Criminal Code and permanent deprivation of civil rights. The case can be appealed. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150506
