(Central News Agency reporter Huang Chiao-wen, Taipei 6th) Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Shih-kai today inspected the National Freeway 1 Wugu Interchange improvement project and announced that the widening project for the northbound ramp to Taiwan Route 64 will officially open to traffic tomorrow at 6 AM. This completion is a significant six months ahead of the originally scheduled target of December 2026, which will eliminate local traffic bottlenecks.
The Wugu Interchange is the 5th busiest hub nationwide, with daily traffic exceeding 130,000 vehicles. It long serves the transportation needs of approximately 560,000 residents in areas like Wugu, Xinzhuang, and Taishan. Previously, the Wugu northbound exit ramp to Taiwan Route 64 only had a single lane, and heavy vehicles often slowed down due to the uphill section, frequently causing congestion to back up onto the main freeway during peak hours.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Freeway Bureau issued a press release stating that Minister Chen Shih-kai visited Wugu District, New Taipei City, this afternoon to inspect the "National Freeway 1 Wugu Interchange Improvement" key sub-project—the "Northbound to Taiwan Route 64 Ramp Widening Improvement."
After listening to the construction team's briefing, Chen Shih-kai announced that the ramp will officially open to traffic tomorrow at 6 AM, completing the project a significant six months ahead of the originally scheduled December 2026 target. This demonstrates the government's determination and high efficiency in resolving local traffic pain points.
Chen Shih-kai pointed out that this project widens the ramp to a two-lane configuration, not only significantly increasing road capacity but also effectively resolving congestion caused by heavy vehicles on uphill sections. It is expected that the service level of the road section will jump from the original congested E-level to a smooth C-level.
Reviewing the overall project benefits, Chen Shih-kai stated that since the newly added northbound elevated ramp crossing Fengjiang Road opened on October 27, 2025, the average speed on the National Freeway 1 northbound section from Linkou to Wugu has increased from 37 km/h to 81 km/h, and travel time has shortened from 21 minutes to 7 minutes, with a significant decrease in accidents. After the widening of the ramp to Taiwan Route 64 opens, it will further eliminate the traffic bottleneck in the area.
The Freeway Bureau explained that the Wugu Interchange also handles traffic from Luzhou, Bali, Sanchong, Banqiao, and Tucheng. In anticipation of the Danjiang Bridge's opening on May 12th, traffic heading to Bali and Tamsui via this ramp is expected to increase significantly. This early completion and opening not only immediately alleviates current congestion but also serves as forward-looking preparation for the traffic volume after the Danjiang Bridge opens. The Bureau will continue to monitor road conditions to ensure the project benefits are realized.
Chen Shih-kai pointed out that the most important value of public works is to make people's lives more convenient, commuting smoother, and roads safer. He specifically thanked the construction team for the early completion of this project and encouraged the team to continue advancing the subsequent northbound entry ramp project, aiming for an opening standard by April 2027 to achieve overall optimization of the Wugu Interchange, allowing residents in Wugu, Xinzhuang, Taishan, and surrounding areas to enjoy a more comfortable, safe, and smooth driving environment.
