(Central News Agency reporter Wu Wen-rong, Kinmen, May 6) Kinmen is about to welcome the peak season for scrub typhus. As chiggers highly rely on rats for parasitism, the Kinmen County Environmental Protection Bureau stated that it has already cleared weeds and transported waste from markets, ditches, and other areas to destroy their habitat and breeding environment. Starting today, county residents can also collect a new batch of free rodent control supplies.
Today, the Kinmen County Environmental Protection Bureau issued a press release stating that chiggers highly rely on rats as hosts. As summer approaches, Kinmen will gradually enter the peak season for scrub typhus.
The Environmental Protection Bureau pointed out that the Kinmen County Government recently promoted the "Friendly Environmental Health Scrub Typhus Prevention and Rodent Extermination Activity." Various government agencies and township offices collaborated to clear weeds and transport waste from high-risk hotspots such as farmland perimeters, abandoned vacant lots, community ditches, and traditional markets, destroying the habitat and breeding environment for rats and chiggers. At the same time, it cooperated with environmental department-approved baits for prevention.
The Environmental Protection Bureau stated that the county government has also long promoted the "Public Self-Collection, Home Prevention" service. From last year until now, residents who collected rodent control tools from the Environmental Protection Bureau have received 1350 packs of rodenticide, 1842 sticky traps, and 275 rat cages.
The Environmental Protection Bureau pointed out that to prepare for the peak epidemic season in summer, a new batch of free rodent control supplies will be distributed starting today. County residents can go to the Environmental Protection Bureau to register and collect rodenticides and rodent trapping equipment. It also reminded that when placing baits, they should prioritize placing them in rat pathways behind corners or piles of debris, and must avoid places accessible to young children and pets for safety. If a rat is successfully caught, gloves must be worn when handling it, and it should be properly sealed and then handed over to the cleaning team for disposal. Finally, the surrounding environment should be disinfected with diluted bleach.
The Environmental Protection Bureau also stated that scrub typhus prevention and rodent extermination are closely related. It urged residents to proactively tidy up their homes and surrounding environment, and to implement the "Three No-Policy" for rodent prevention: "No food for rats" by cutting off food and water sources, "No entry for rats" by blocking passages, and "No shelter for rats" by clearing habitats. By regularly inspecting communities and workplaces, reducing clutter, and clearing weeds and stagnant water in gardens, the food sources and hiding places for rats can be effectively cut off, fundamentally eliminating rat breeding.
