(Central News Agency reporter Lin Xingjian, Manila 6th) The 48th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit is about to be held in Cebu City. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that amidst global tensions in many regions, participating leaders will focus on the security of energy, food, and overseas nationals.
This year, the Philippines holds the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN and will host the summit in the central city of Cebu on May 8th, with the theme "Navigating Our Future, Together."
Marcos Jr. today released a video stating that ASEAN leaders will exchange views on regional and global issues, including how to ensure stable energy supply, accelerate energy diversification, and mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict.
He also emphasized the importance of protecting Southeast Asian expatriates abroad and pledged that ASEAN will ensure their safety around the world amidst changing regional situations.
Marcos Jr. added that, as the summit chair, he will promote strengthening regional food security, ensuring the free flow of essential goods, and establishing measures to support farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Philippine Assistant Foreign Secretary and ASEAN Spokesperson Dominic Xavier Imperial explained at a press conference today that a series of preparatory meetings will be held before the summit, including senior officials' meetings, foreign ministers' meetings, and joint meetings of foreign and economic ministers.
Imperial also mentioned that the "Code of Conduct in the South China Sea" (COC), as an "independent and separate" negotiation process, has achieved "encouraging" progress. Officials from ASEAN and China committed to holding additional meetings in January this year, with one held last month and another scheduled within the next few weeks. (Editor: Tian Ruihua) 1150506
