(Central News Agency reporter Yang Shu-min, Taipei 5th) Amid growing concerns over rodent infestations, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an announced today that following the first cleanup in February, a second large-scale cleanup across all 12 districts will be conducted soon. Households can apply for assistance from 'rodent detectives,' market sanitation will be strengthened, and urban renewal construction sites will be required to submit rodent prevention reports before starting and during construction.

Following frequent public reports of rats appearing on Taipei streets, and even netizens reporting family members being bitten by rats, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an today led the Environmental Protection Department and other relevant agencies to hold a "Taipei City Rodent Control Press Conference." He announced that the city government team will comprehensively prevent, thoroughly clean, and holistically address the rodent problem across all departments, asking citizens not to panic and also to uphold the professionalism and dignity of frontline civil servants.

Chiang Wan-an said that following the first large-scale cleanup across all 12 administrative districts during the Lunar New Year this year, the entire city government will mobilize again in the shortest possible time to conduct a second large-scale cleanup across all 12 administrative districts, from beginning to end, district by district, ensuring all necessary cleanups are done. They will also launch 'rodent detectives,' and citizens can apply for assistance with household rodent prevention.

He added that the Department of Economic Development's Market Administration Office will strengthen market sanitation, including installing stainless steel nets in drainage ditches for restaurants and markets, sealing holes in buildings, air conditioning pipes, gas lines, etc., and strengthening the management of garbage and food waste disposal by vendors after closing. For registered vendors in collected markets, grease traps will be installed. The Department of Economic Development stated that incentives will be provided first, subsidizing 80% of installation costs, and inspections will be conducted after the promotional period.

Chiang Wan-an also said that some experts have suggested that Taipei entering an era of major urban renewal might be one of the reasons for the proliferation of rodents. Interior renovation and demolition of old and dangerous buildings for urban renewal will require the submission of rodent prevention reports.

The Department of Urban Development explained that a rodent prevention completion report, including work records and on-site photos, must be attached before construction begins. During construction, prevention work must be carried out regularly, and prevention reports submitted every six months. For commercial spaces larger than 500 square meters and restaurants larger than 300 square meters, rodent prevention work must be completed before interior renovation can begin for construction permits to be issued.
