(Central News Agency reporter Chao Li-yen, Taichung, May 5) The Taichung HSR overpass in Wuri District began a trial for two-way motorcycle access on May 1st. The overpass, which is two stories high, caused safety concerns due to its low guardrails. Taichung City Councilor Wu Chiung-hua of the Kuomintang suggested raising the guardrails. The Construction Bureau stated that they would promote this if two-way motorcycle access is confirmed to be permanent.
The Taichung City Transportation Bureau opened the "HSR Overpass," which connects Provincial Highway 74 and the three-in-one transportation hub (HSR, TRA, Metro), for two-way motorcycle access starting May 1st for a three-month trial period. The Taichung City Council held a urban development, construction, and water resources consultation today. Taichung City Councilor Wu Chiung-hua pointed out that Taichung HSR Station is an important transportation hub in central Taiwan, and motorcyclists, unable to use the HSR overpass, had to detour on surface roads, increasing commuting time by 10 to 15 minutes.
Wu Chiung-hua pointed out that with the city government opening the overpass for two-way motorcycle access, commuting time is expected to be cut by more than half. However, because the overpass spans Xuetian Road and is about two stories high, the guardrails on the motorcycle lane are too low. She suggested raising the guardrails to ensure the safety of motorcyclists.
Construction Bureau Director Chen Da-tian stated that further research will be conducted. Currently, motorcycle access is a trial. After the three-month trial, if motorcycle access is confirmed to be permanent, they will proceed with the proposal. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150505
