(Central News Agency reporter Chen Chih-chung, Taipei, 5th) To eliminate 'period poverty,' schools at all levels began providing free menstrual products in August 2023, combined with menstrual education. To date, a cumulative total of NT$420 million has been invested, benefiting approximately 222,000 students.

From puberty, women spend a portion of their monthly expenses on menstrual products, but not everyone can afford them, leading to the predicament of 'period poverty.'

Under the attention of civil society organizations and legislators, the Ministry of Education began providing free menstrual products on campus in the 2023 academic year. A press release issued today stated that from the 2023 to 2026 academic years, cumulative subsidies exceeding NT$427 million have been invested to assist schools in completing the allocation of menstrual products before the start of the school year.

In addition to material assistance, menstrual education is even more important. Students of different genders must understand menstrual knowledge to truly remove the stigma. The Ministry of Education has successively provided 38 teaching resources, uploaded to the 'Taiwan Health Promoting Schools Network' and the 'Gender Equality Education Global Information Network,' for use by teachers and students in various schools.

Schools in various counties and cities have also shown creativity, designing innovative teaching programs. For example, National Fengshan Commercial & Industrial Vocational High School in Kaohsiung City, through campus space planning and innovative slogan design, allows students to learn about menstrual discomfort and care while climbing stairs, creating a warm and friendly environment for menstrual equality.

Teachers and students from National Miaoli Senior High School formed a team to participate in the 'National High School and Vocational School Sustainable Empowerment Innovation Proposal Competition,' winning third place nationwide with the theme 'Breaking Taboos: Confronting Menstrual Stigma.' In June of the same year, a nurse also presented a paper at an international nursing conference in Finland, sharing practical experience.

According to the Ministry of Education, in the future, it will continue to integrate internal and external resources, pay attention to student needs and feedback, enhance the understanding and inclusivity of teachers and students on campus regarding menstrual issues, and build a respectful, diverse, and inclusive friendly campus environment.
