(Central News Agency, Bucharest, May 5th, comprehensive foreign reports) The Romanian Parliament today passed a no-confidence motion, ousting liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, a development that further deepens Romania's political turmoil. The country borders Ukraine and is a member of the European Union and NATO.

According to AFP, the no-confidence motion was jointly proposed by Romania's largest party, the left-wing Social Democratic Party (PSD), and the far-right camp. The PSD's move drew criticism, with some arguing that they were legitimizing the rise of far-right forces.

The no-confidence motion passed with 281 votes in favor in the 464-seat parliament. Bolojan's liberal National Liberal Party (PNL) and its ally, the Save Romania Union (USR), were present but did not participate in the vote.

Bolojan, 57, had intensified tensions with the Social Democratic Party by pushing unpopular austerity measures to reduce the national fiscal deficit, which is the highest in the EU.

The Social Democratic Party withdrew from the government last month and cooperated with Romania's main far-right party, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), to propose the no-confidence motion against Bolojan.

Since the last parliamentary elections, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians has surpassed the Social Democratic Party in polls, with its support currently around 37%.

Romania's pro-EU President Nicusor Dan, however, assured that the Eastern European country of 19 million people will maintain its pro-Western course and ruled out the possibility of a far-right government. (Compiler: Hung Pei-ying) 1150505
