(Central News Agency reporter Wang Yang-yu, Taipei, 5th) The Legislative Yuan today conducted a roll-call vote on the nomination of Hsu Hsi-hsiang for Prosecutor-General. With the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) legislators casting dissenting votes, Hsu Hsi-hsiang failed to pass the approval threshold, and the nomination was rejected.
The Presidential Office announced in a press release on March 13th that the term of the current Prosecutor-General of the Supreme Prosecutors Office, Hsing Tai-chao, would expire on May 7th. President Lai Ching-te, in accordance with the provisions of the Court Organization Act, nominated Hsu Hsi-hsiang, Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme Prosecutors Office, as the Prosecutor-General of the Supreme Prosecutors Office, and requested the Legislative Yuan to exercise its power of consent.
After negotiations between the Legislative Yuan's party caucuses on April 17th, it was decided that a roll-call vote on the Prosecutor-General nomination would be held this morning.
The Legislative Yuan currently has 113 seats. According to the distribution of seats among parties in the parliament, the KMT, along with independent legislators Chen Chao-ming and Kao Chin Su-mei who participate in the KMT caucus operations, holds a total of 54 seats. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has 51 seats, and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) has 8 seats.
According to Article 29, Paragraph 2 of the Act Governing the Legislative Yuan's Power, when the Legislative Yuan exercises its power of consent for personnel appointments other than those specified in Article 29, Paragraph 1, it shall not proceed to debate but shall refer the matter to the relevant committee for review. After review, it shall be submitted to the plenary session for a roll-call vote, and approval requires the consent of more than one-half of all legislators. Currently, the total number of legislators is 113, so 57 votes are required for approval. Conversely, it will be rejected. (Editor: Su Lung-chi) 1150505
