(Central News Agency reporter Huang Chiao-wen, Taipei, 5th) Mother's Day is approaching, and many people are planning gatherings and outings. The Freeway Bureau said today that highway traffic volume during the holiday is estimated to increase by 5% to 7% compared to normal weekends; it plans to implement advanced ramp metering at 12 locations on May 9th and 10th, and National Freeway 5 northbound entrance HOV control from 3 PM to 8 PM on the afternoon of May 10th.

Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May each year, which is May 10th this year, and many people are planning outings or gatherings to celebrate. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Freeway Bureau issued a press release stating that, based on statistics and characteristics of highway traffic volume during recent Mother's Day holidays and regular weekends, the demand for highway travel during this holiday is expected to be mainly for short-distance trips, with a total daily traffic volume of approximately 108 to 110 million vehicle-kilometers, an increase of about 5% to 7% compared to normal weekends.

In response to the traffic demand during the Mother's Day holiday, the Freeway Bureau stated that it plans to implement advanced ramp metering at 12 key sections on May 9th and 10th, strictly control ramp metering based on main highway traffic conditions, flexibly increase open shoulder sections and times, and suspend all highway construction and routine maintenance (except for emergency repairs and projects that do not affect main highway traffic) as traffic diversion measures.

Among these, National Freeway 5 Su'ao, Luodong, Yilan, and Toucheng northbound entrance ramps will implement HOV control as usual from 3 PM to 8 PM on the afternoon of May 10th.

The Freeway Bureau stated that highway traffic volume is expected to increase during the Mother's Day holiday, and some bottleneck sections may experience congestion. Specifically, on May 9th, southbound sections in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Changhua, and on May 10th, northbound sections in Nantou, Changhua, Taichung, Miaoli, Hsinchu, and Taoyuan may experience heavy traffic.

The Freeway Bureau suggests that the public make more use of public transportation, which can not only save time but also reduce the inconvenience caused by traffic jams.

The Freeway Bureau reminds road users to check real-time traffic conditions using the "Freeway 1968" App or online before driving on the highway, flexibly adjust travel times and routes, and make good use of alternative roads to avoid congestion. It also calls for drivers not to speed, drive while fatigued, distracted, or drunk, and to fasten seat belts and maintain a safe driving distance. (Editor: Li Heng-shan) 1150505
