(Central News Agency reporter Wang Chao-yu, Yilan 5th) A man surnamed Chang in Yilan County, who lived with his 91-year-old mother, was accused of defrauding elderly pensions by concealing his mother's death. He was initially released without bail, but the prosecutor appealed. Today, the judge ruled that Chang's statements were inconsistent and there was a risk of collusion and destruction of evidence, ordering his detention.
The Luodong Precinct of the Yilan County Government Police Bureau recently received a report from family members stating that they had been unable to contact their mother, who lived in Luodong Township, for several years. Their repeated attempts to visit were refused by Chang, who lived with her. The police reported the case to Prosecutor Lin Yu-hung of the Yilan District Prosecutors Office for investigation. On the evening of April 16, they executed a search warrant at the residence and found that the elderly woman had been deceased for a considerable time.
Investigators found that the elderly woman had no medical records in recent years, and her monthly elderly pension was withdrawn by Chang, who lived with her, at the post office. Prosecutors suspect that Chang had fraudulently claimed over NT$200,000 in elderly pensions. After detaining and questioning Chang, the prosecutor determined that Chang was highly suspected of committing offenses such as forgery and fraud, and that there was a risk of repeated offenses and destruction of evidence. The prosecutor applied to the Yilan District Court for detention with restricted communication, but the judge ruled for release without bail.
After the prosecutor appealed, the Taiwan High Court remanded the case to the district court for reconsideration. After a hearing at 11 AM today, the judge determined that Chang's statements regarding the case were inconsistent, and he was unclear about the cause and time of his mother's death. If he were not detained, there would be a risk of colluding with witnesses and destroying evidence, making it difficult to uncover the truth. Therefore, the judge ordered his detention with restricted communication. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150505
