(Central News Agency reporter Liu Kuan-ting, Taipei, 5th) The Kuomintang (KMT) legislative caucus held a caucus meeting today to continue discussing the draft National Defense Special Act, but the final version has not yet been finalized. Although KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wen said yesterday that most KMT legislators supported the NT$380 billion + N plan, KMT legislator Ko Chih-en said today, "There's a bit of a misunderstanding with this information and our understanding."
The KMT caucus continued to discuss the draft National Defense Special Act at its caucus meeting today. KMT legislator Lai Shih-bao proposed a compromise plan, retaining the party's version of NT$380 billion + N, and additionally proposing to increase the budget to NT$800 billion after the second wave of Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) from the US side arrives. KMT caucus convener Fu Kun-chi said that various versions are still under discussion, and the consensus is that there must be an LOA.
Regarding Cheng Li-wen's repeated emphasis yesterday that her stance on military procurement has not changed, her arguments are clear, and most of the caucus supports the NT$380 billion + N plan and has never wavered, and that changing to NT$800 billion is a minority opinion, Ko Chih-en said in an interview today, "There's a bit of a misunderstanding with this information and our understanding."
However, Ko Chih-en also stated that the biggest consensus is that internal party discussions should be open and transparent, and everyone should have a consensus and speak consistently to the outside world. Perhaps a new amendment will emerge.
When asked if there was pressure from the election, Ko Chih-en believed that it was actually unrelated to the election, as there are still 7 months until the election. She did not want to appear as if there was a conflict between the party headquarters and the caucus. In fact, whether it is the NT$800 billion or NT$380 billion + N version, they all lead to the same goal.
Ko Chih-en emphasized that it is still one sentence: support national defense autonomy and support the national defense budget, but whether the budget is to be allocated at NT$800 billion or with some additional adjustments within NT$380 billion, this is still under discussion.
