NEW YORK (CNA) -- The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala (Met Gala) took place today in New York, with stars from Hollywood, music, sports, and fashion gathering. However, outside the venue, protesters criticized Amazon founder Jeff Bezos for sponsoring the event.

Reuters and AFP reported that celebrities such as singer Sam Smith, Doja Cat, actress Nicole Kidman, and Bezos's wife Lauren Sanchez Bezos made their appearances.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), all four members of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK attended the Met Gala for the first time. Lisa, a member of the event's host committee, appeared in a white custom gown by Robert Wun. Lisa stated in an interview that the 3D printed arm design was modeled after her real arm.

Rosé wore a black Saint Laurent gown; Jennie transformed into a mermaid in a blue Chanel gown; and Jisoo made her Met Gala debut in a pink-toned Dior gown.

Bezos and his wife were the main sponsors of this year's event, with media reporting that they donated $10 million (approximately NT$319 million) and served as honorary chairs, drawing calls for boycotts from those concerned about wealth inequality and labor rights.

Protesters in colorful attire held up letter signs outside the venue spelling out "Tax the Rich," as well as slogans like "Boycott the Red Carpet" and "Eat the Rich."

The Met Gala is a major fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, with this year's theme being "Fashion as Art." Tickets cost $100,000 each, and most celebrities attended as guests.

Tennis legend Venus Williams and Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, who served as co-chairs of the event, were among the first to arrive.

Nicole Kidman stunned in a shimmering red long-sleeved Chanel gown with wide feather cuffs.

Venus Williams shone in a black Swarovski crystal gown paired with an elaborate neckpiece. Williams stated in an interview that her look was inspired by a painting of her at the National Portrait Gallery.

Rapper Doja Cat, also a co-chair, wore a draped latex Saint Laurent gown with a conservative neckline but a high slit extending to the waist.

Another co-chair, pop diva Beyoncé, attended for the first time in 10 years, exuding queenly dominance in a jewel-encrusted skeletal gown paired with a dramatic feathered coat and headpiece. (Compiled by Lu Ying-tzu) 1150505
