(Central News Agency reporter Wu Hsin-yun, Taipei, 5th) The American Philosophical Society (APS) recently announced its new fellows for 2026, with Academia Sinica President Liao Chun-chih elected as a fellow in the mathematical and physical sciences, becoming one of the few international scholars selected this year. He will be invited to attend the induction ceremony in Philadelphia, USA, in November.

The APS was founded by American founding father Benjamin Franklin in 1743 and is the oldest existing academic organization in the United States. It has long brought together scholars from various fields to present research and discussions through academic conferences and forums, and to continuously exchange ideas on contemporary important issues such as scientific development, public policy, and humanities, enjoying a high reputation internationally.

Academia Sinica issued a press release today stating that the American Philosophical Society recently announced its new fellows for 2026, and Liao Chun-chih was elected as a fellow in Class I, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, which covers fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, engineering, and computer science.

Academia Sinica stated that the APS selects a maximum of 10 fellows in mathematical and physical sciences from around the world each year, highlighting the representativeness of this honor. Being elected as a fellow of the society is a high affirmation of scientific achievements and also demonstrates members' intellectual contributions to the world, original insights in the philosophy of science, and positive influence on human society.

Academia Sinica pointed out that Liao Chun-chih will be invited to attend the induction ceremony in Philadelphia, USA, in November, and will traditionally sign the membership roster, which continues the academic tradition since the 18th century, recording past members.

Liao Chun-chih is an internationally renowned synthetic biologist, specializing in the design and evolution of metabolic pathways. He has long studied the mechanisms of microorganisms and plants absorbing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to respond to global climate change challenges.

In addition, Liao Chun-chih actively promotes key research in artificial intelligence, energy technology, and quantum computing, and is one of the few Taiwanese scholars who have simultaneously been elected as academicians of multiple top international academic institutions, including Academia Sinica, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), demonstrating that his research achievements have received high recognition in the academic community.
