(Central News Agency, Taipei, 4th) According to reports from Myanmar media and Kyodo News, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of Myanmar's former civilian government and Nobel laureate, during his visit to Myanmar in late April. The meeting took place in a ministerial residence where Aung San Suu Kyi is under house arrest, with Myanmar officials present.

Myanmar media Mizzima reported on the 2nd that Aung San Suu Kyi had been moved to a ministerial residence in Naypyidaw for house arrest, and was reportedly in "good health."

The report stated that Wang Yi, who arrived in Naypyidaw on April 25, met with Aung San Suu Kyi at the residence. Both China and Myanmar only released information about Wang Yi's meeting with Myanmar's new President Min Aung Hlaing, and did not release news of his meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi. Sources said this was by mutual agreement not to disclose it publicly.

The Irrawaddy, a Myanmar magazine, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on the 2nd that Wang Yi met with Aung San Suu Kyi. Subsequently, on the 3rd, it posted that Wang Yi reportedly met with Aung San Suu Kyi during his visit to Naypyidaw in April. Officials were present at the meeting, but no official records were allowed.

Kyodo News on the 3rd republished reports from Myanmar media, stating that Wang Yi met with Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest, in Naypyidaw.

At the Chinese Foreign Ministry's regular press conference on April 30, an AFP reporter asked if Wang Yi had discussed Aung San Suu Kyi during his meeting with Min Aung Hlaing.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated, "Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi is an old friend of China, and we have always been concerned about her situation." As a friendly neighbor, China supports Myanmar in taking a development path that suits its national conditions and supports all parties in Myanmar in achieving broader, stronger, and more lasting peace and reconciliation.

Myanmar's military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government in a coup in February 2021. Subsequently, Aung San Suu Kyi underwent a lengthy secret trial and was sentenced to 33 years in prison on multiple charges, including corruption, incitement to electoral fraud, and violating the Official Secrets Act. Her sentence was later reduced. Members of Aung San Suu Kyi's legal team confirmed that she has been transferred to house arrest. (Editors: Chen Kai-yu/Lu Chia-jung) 1150504
