(Central News Agency reporter Tsai Chih-ming, Yunlin County, May 4) With 70% of the national peanut cultivation area located in Yunlin, in response to the impact of zero tariffs on US peanut imports, the county government today invited relevant industry players and farmers to hold a seminar. Most attendees recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture swiftly propose comprehensive countermeasures to enhance the competitiveness of domestic peanuts in the market.

Today, the Yunlin County Government invited peanut production and marketing teams, peanut industry processors, and various township and city farmers' associations and offices to hold a seminar at the second-floor conference room of the Huwei Township Farmers' Association, chaired by Agriculture Department Director Wei Sheng-de.

During the seminar, most attendees believed that the Ministry of Agriculture should swiftly propose comprehensive countermeasures. They suggested properly planning the use of the NT$30 billion agricultural stabilization fund, strengthening border management and import labeling systems, implementing a peanut raw material origin labeling system, establishing a long-term industry guidance policy, and boosting confidence in the peanut industry chain.

The attendees called on central and local governments to collaborate in promoting the branding of domestic peanuts. The central government should establish systems and provide resource support, while local governments should be responsible for promoting origin certification marks, production and sales traceability, and local brands, allowing consumers to clearly distinguish between domestic and imported products and enhance the competitiveness of domestic peanuts.

Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan stated that since the zero tariff on US peanut imports is a 'fait accompli' and cannot be changed, she believes everyone must rationally face the challenges ahead. She hopes that central and local governments will work together to protect farmers' rights and resolve issues arising from the zero tariff on US peanuts.

The Yunlin County Agriculture Department stated that with the promotion of the Taiwan-US Trade Agreement, US peanuts will enter the market with zero tariffs and exemption from special safeguard measures (SSG). The price of imported peanuts is estimated to be significantly lower than domestic peanuts, which will inevitably impact farmers' incomes and industry development. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150504
