(Central News Agency reporter Ho Hsiu-ling, Taipei, May 4th) The Taiwan stock market opened high and continued to rise today, surging 1828.89 points intraday, with a peak of 40755.52 points; it closed at 40705.14 points, up 1778.51 points, marking its first close above 40000 points. Both intraday and closing indices, as well as the gain, set new historical records, with a trading volume of NT$106.887 billion.

Leading stock TSMC climbed to NT$2285 intraday, up NT$150, setting the largest intraday increase in history; it closed at NT$2275, up NT$140.

Other leading stocks' closing performances: Hon Hai rose NT$8 to NT$227.5; MediaTek hit its daily limit at NT$2870; Delta Electronics rose NT$55 to NT$2220.

The electronic sector index rose by 5.58%, the financial sector index fell by 0.17%, and the OTC stock index, representing small and medium-sized stocks, rose by 3.55%.

MediaTek was boosted by foreign institutional price targets, hitting its daily limit and driving the performance of IC design concept stocks, including AP Memory, GUC, Leadtek, and M31, all hitting their daily limits.

Optical communication CPO concept stocks also showed strong performance, with Unimicron Technology Corp., Lite-On Technology Corp., Walsin Technology Corp., Epistar Corp.
