(Central News Agency reporter Lu Gang-Jun, Hsinchu City 4th) A person returning to Taiwan after traveling abroad developed fever and cold symptoms. Due to worsening symptoms and accompanying breathing difficulties, medical examination revealed a confirmed diagnosis of mycoplasma pneumonia. Doctors remind that if a cough persists for more than one week or is accompanied by warning signs such as fever, chest tightness, or rapid breathing, one should seek medical attention promptly.
Dr. Chang Chia-Hao, an internist at National Taiwan University Hospital Hsinchu Branch, stated today in a press release that mycoplasma pneumonia is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets and is common in crowded places such as schools and offices. Although this disease is more prevalent among children and young adults, adults are also at risk of infection.
Mycoplasma infection is often referred to as “atypical pneumonia,” Dr. Chang Chia-Hao pointed out, mainly because imaging examinations show extensive lung infection, but clinical symptoms are sometimes relatively mild, making it easily mistaken for a common cold. A common feature is a prolonged cough, and if not treated promptly, it can worsen into acute bronchitis and even lead to severe pneumonia with lung infiltration.
Dr. Chang Chia-Hao said that if a cough persists for more than one week without improvement, or if warning signs such as fever, chest tightness, or rapid breathing appear concurrently, one should seek medical attention promptly for X-ray or PCR testing. He also reminded the public to wash hands frequently, maintain a regular routine, and avoid crowded places with poor ventilation. (Edited by Chang Ming-Kun) 1150504
