(Central News Agency, Oslo, 4th, comprehensive foreign reports) Swedish prosecutors announced today that after a tanker suspected of belonging to Russia's "shadow fleet" was seized, its Chinese captain was arrested on suspicion of possessing forged documents and violating navigation regulations.
According to Reuters and Agence France-Presse, the Swedish Coast Guard and police boarded the 182-meter-long "Jin Hui" (transliteration) yesterday in Swedish territorial waters. The ship was suspected of flying a forged Syrian flag.
Swedish senior prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg stated through a statement that the captain will be interrogated today. The prosecutor did not release the captain's name.
Swedish authorities stated that the tanker is believed to belong to the "shadow fleet," which is Russia's underground network of vessels used to circumvent Western sanctions imposed on Russia due to the war in Ukraine.
As European countries intensify their crackdown on the "shadow fleet," this action against the "Jin Hui" is Sweden's fifth similar measure this year.
Russia has not yet commented, but has previously condemned the interception of its vessels as "hostile" actions.
The Swedish Coast Guard pointed out that the tanker is on multiple sanctions lists, including those of the EU and the UK; its destination is unknown, and it is believed that it was not carrying cargo at the time. (Compiler: Hung Pei-ying) 1150504
