(Central News Agency reporter Yang Shu-min, Taipei, 4th) Citizens have frequently reported rat sightings on the streets of Taipei, raising concerns about children and pets accidentally ingesting poison. Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming suggested disclosing the locations where poison is laid. In response, Taipei City Environmental Protection Department Director Hsu Shih-hsun said today that they would try to integrate information on filling rat holes and poison use to make it easier for the public to understand.

Taipei City's handling of the rat problem has attracted attention, including concerns about whether the method of administering poison could lead to accidental poisoning of children, pets, stray animals, birds, and other wildlife. Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming said today that Taipei City should disclose the locations where rat poison is laid and also believes that Mayor Chiang Wan-an should mobilize cross-departmental efforts to address the issue.

Hsu Shih-hsun said in a media interview that, in terms of overall rat control, medication is the last resort. Therefore, they will integrate all relevant rat prevention practices, whether it's waste accumulation areas where rats live, filling rat holes, setting up rat cages, and then the use of medication, to make it easier for the public to understand.

When asked by the media if Taipei City had identified rat hotspots, Hsu Shih-hsun said that over the past few months, starting from November and December last year, the number of reported cases was only about 10 throughout the month. Later, as the media continuously reported, (the Environmental Protection Department statistics showed 258 cases in February and 90 cases in March), relatively hot areas, in addition to Daan District, also include Zhongshan, Zhongzheng, Datong, and Wanhua areas. However, the numbers are not very high, but environmental cleaning efforts must still be made.

Regarding Hsu Shih-hsun's discussion with the Ministry of Environment this afternoon on rat control issues, Hsu Shih-hsun said that they raised questions about how to define rat infestation, whether there are modules for confirmation, and what constitutes an excessive number. The Ministry of Environment confirmed that there are currently none, and Taipei City is willing to work with the Ministry of Environment.

He also said that regarding suggestions to use hormonal drugs, the Ministry of Environment confirmed that such drugs are currently not approved for use in Taiwan. If there are good and usable drugs, the Ministry of Environment welcomes applications. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150504
