Nearly 420,000 Taiwanese Tourists Visited Hong Kong in Q1, Up 13% Year-on-Year
Nearly 420,000 Taiwanese tourists visited Hong Kong in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same period last year. Despite a decrease in travel inquiries due to rising aviation fuel surcharges, Hong Kong's geographical proximity to Taiwan is expected to mitigate the impact.

TAIPEI (CNA) — According to statistics from the Hong Kong Tourism Board, nearly 420,000 Taiwanese tourists visited Hong Kong in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same period last year. Among them, approximately 214,000 were overnight visitors, making Taiwan the second-largest source market after mainland China.
Vivian Hsu, Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board's Taiwan office, told the media today that the number of Taiwanese tourists traveling to Hong Kong has been steadily growing, with 420,000 visitors from January to March this year, representing a 13.2% increase compared to the same period last year.
Hsu stated that according to statistics, a total of nearly 1.58 million visitors arrived in Hong Kong last year, with 860,000 of them being overnight visitors. Further analysis of overnight visitors shows that 26% participated in arts and cultural activities (including concerts), 24% were for gourmet food, and 22% visited attractions (such as Disneyland).
Due to the Middle East conflict causing rising oil prices, aviation fuel surcharges increased starting April 7. Hsu said that the past tax was approximately NT$3,500, but now it is about NT$5,500. Therefore, the focus of travel promotions has shifted from the previous 3-day, 2-night trips to 4-day, 3-night trips.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board mentioned that after the increase in fuel surcharges, according to feedback from travel agencies, travel inquiries have indeed decreased. However, the impact on Hong Kong is not as significant, mainly because its geographical location is closer to Taiwan, making travel to Hong Kong relatively easy. Additionally, if air tickets are purchased early, the price difference will not be substantial.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board announced that starting immediately, it has invited 8 operators to launch a two-week online travel fair. They recommend travelers visit Cheung Chau, an outlying island in Hong Kong, in May to participate in the unique folk festival "Cheung Chau Bun Festival," and in June, there will be the International Dragon Boat Race and Dragon Boat Festival Carnival activities.
Regarding attractions, the Hong Kong Tourism Board introduced that the famous Yau Ma Tei Police Station has been renovated this year, creating an immersive exhibition themed after Hong Kong police films; the Hong Kong Museum of History has also been renovated, exhibiting 2,800 artifacts and historical scenes.
