(Central News Agency reporter Chang Hsiung-feng, Taipei, 4th) The Ministry of Labor today announced the latest statistics on furloughs (reduced working hours and rest). There are 264 companies implementing furloughs, affecting 3,632 people, both showing a slight increase compared to the previous period. The Ministry of Labor stated that the furlough data has largely remained stable with little change over the past two months, primarily concentrated in the manufacturing sector.

The Ministry of Labor today announced that 264 businesses reported by labor administrative authorities as implementing reduced working hours due to economic impacts on labor-management negotiations, affecting 3,632 individuals. Compared to the 245 businesses and 3,442 individuals reported on April 16, there was an increase of 19 businesses and 190 individuals.

Wang Chin-jung, deputy director of the Department of Labor Standards and Employment Equality at the Ministry of Labor, told the Central News Agency that the majority of those currently on furlough, numbering 3,307 individuals, are still in the manufacturing sector. However, most are from small businesses, and there hasn't been a particularly significant increase across various industries. Generally, companies attribute the furloughs to reduced orders.

Wang Chin-jung noted that 201 companies, affecting 2,545 individuals, reported being impacted by US tariffs, an increase of 153 individuals from the previous period, which aligns with the overall increase in the number of companies and individuals.

Wang Chin-jung explained that the number of people on furlough, which was 3,623 in mid-February and is now 3,632, has fluctuated slightly but has remained largely stable over the past two months, with no significant changes.

The Ministry of Labor stated that among the workers currently on furlough, 68.6% of the companies (181 companies) are in industries eligible for the Employment Stability Program, and nearly 80% of the employees (2,796 individuals) can apply for wage differential subsidies. This means that in addition to employers paying wages no lower than the minimum wage, the Ministry of Labor also provides a subsidy of 70% of the wage difference, supporting workers' economic livelihoods.
