(Taipei, CNA reporter Wang Bao-er, 4th) To expand the possibilities of museums, the first Museum Exhibition Award opened for applications today. It will select outstanding exhibitions, popular exhibitions, and other awards. Wang Shih-Szu, Chairman of the Taiwan Museum Foundation, stated that she hopes to make museums a brand for Taiwan facing the world.
The Museum Exhibition Award is hosted by the Taiwan Museum Foundation. The press conference for the inaugural call for entries was held this morning. Chairman Wang Shih-Szu stated that this is an important milestone. The core mission of the Taiwan Museum Foundation is to consolidate Taiwan's museum community, establish a Taiwanese museum identity, and serve as a platform for international exchange.
Wang Shih-Szu stated that through the first Museum Exhibition Award, she hopes that museums can move beyond their original functions of collection, research, education, and exhibition to further inspire and communicate, allowing people to see how museums use creative design to communicate content narratives to society, and to see museums, like museums, and visit museums.
The first Museum Exhibition Award opened for applications today. Exhibitions must still be on display at the time of application, and any exhibition for which an observer can be dispatched for on-site viewing is eligible. Each museum can apply for a maximum of 3 exhibitions per year. Ultimately, one "Jury's Special Award" with a prize of NT$200,000, ten "Outstanding Exhibition Awards" with NT$100,000 each, and one "Publicly Voted Best Popularity Award" with a prize of NT$100,000 will be selected. The shortlist is expected to be announced in April 2027.
Minister of Culture Li Yuan stated in his speech that, regardless of the museum, exhibition performance demonstrates the strength of a nation. In his eyes, museums are lonely, quiet spaces, and exhibitions are like a drama. Researchers are playwrights, and curators are directors, working together to create new meaning. The performance ends after the exhibition period, and it would be a pity to just glance through it.
Li Yuan mentioned that he hopes the first Museum Exhibition Award can also hold a grand exhibition after the selection, because he believes most people are unfamiliar with museums. He believes that the Museum Exhibition Award can make Taiwanese people more aware of the importance of museums and curation. This will be a significant start.
Hung Shih-Yu, Chairman of the Chinese Association of Museums, believes that this award can also cultivate many future curatorial talents. Legislator Wu Szu-Yao recounted past experiences of inviting President Lai Ching-Te and former Vice President Chen Chien-Jen, who will become the President of Academia Sinica, to view exhibitions, which led to more possibilities. "The power of exhibitions is so strong," she hopes the Museum Exhibition Award can redefine the meaning of museums.
