Chunghwa Post: Deformed Tires on Postal Motorcycles to be Fully Replaced

Central News Agency (CNA) — Recent reports indicate frequent deformation of tires on postal delivery motorcycles, posing a safety risk to postal workers. Chunghwa Post Chairman Wang Kuo-tsai today admitted that while the procured tires met specifications, their quality was inferior. He has ordered the manufacturer to replace all tires, including those already installed on motorcycles.

The Legislative Yuan's Transportation Committee today reviewed the budgets for the National Transportation Safety Council and Chunghwa Post.

Liao Nai-chen, Chairman of the Taiwan Postal Industry Union, recently pointed out that postal delivery motorcycle tires frequently experienced blowouts and deformation, which could affect driving safety.

Kuomintang Legislator Hung Mong-kai also raised concerns about the issue today. Hung asked if a political ethics investigation should be launched given Chunghwa Post's record-high revenue, emphasizing that frontline safety cannot be compromised.

Chunghwa Post Chairman Wang Kuo-tsai responded that the spare tires procured this time met relevant specifications during acceptance tests, but their actual performance showed inferior quality. He has instructed the manufacturer to replace all tires, including those already fitted on motorcycles.

Wang Kuo-tsai stated that it hasn't reached the standard for a political ethics investigation. He explained that in the past, procurement for such items was based on the lowest bid, considering it a non-technical matter. In the future, the company will move towards a 'most advantageous bid' approach.
