(Central News Agency reporter Chang Hsiung-feng, Taipei, May 4) Academia Sinica announced today that Academician George C. Tiao passed away in the United States on April 25 at the age of 93; he served multiple terms as a councilor of Academia Sinica, and as a corresponding researcher and academic advisory committee member for the Institute of Statistical Science and the Institute of Economics, and paid close attention to the development of statistical science in Taiwan.

Academia Sinica stated that Academician Tiao Jin-huan was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), and received the ASA's S. S. Wilks Memorial Award and the Julius Shiskin Award jointly presented by the Washington Statistical Society, the ASA, and the American Economic Association. He also received honorary professorships and doctoral degrees from many internationally renowned universities; in 1976, he was elected as the 11th Academician of Academia Sinica.

Academician Tiao Jin-huan was an internationally renowned statistician, Academia Sinica stated, specializing in Bayesian inference, econometrics, time series analysis, and their applications; his research on environmental statistical analysis of air pollution and ozone layer data was outstanding, and he assisted the government in estimating and forecasting policy effects.

In addition, Academician Tiao Jin-huan actively advocated for the interdisciplinary integration of statistics with fields such as economics, management, and life sciences, profoundly influencing the development of statistical theory and practice.

After receiving his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1962, Academician Tiao Jin-huan remained to teach there, serving as Chairman of the Department of Statistics from 1973 to 1975. From 1982, he was appointed as the W. Allen Wallis Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago until his retirement in 2003.

Academia Sinica pointed out that Academician Tiao Jin-huan was deeply concerned about the development of statistical science in Taiwan, assisting in the promotion of the establishment of Academia Sinica's Institute of Statistical Science, the National Health Research Institutes' Biostatistics Division, and academic units such as National Tsing Hua University's Institute of Statistics and Department of Quantitative Finance, and also founded the 'International Chinese Statistical Association' (ICSA). He served as the founding editor-in-chief of 'Statistica Sinica', co-published by ICSA and Academia Sinica's Institute of Statistical Science, sparing no effort to enhance the journal's international academic visibility.
