(Taipei, May 4, CNA) The Taiwan Journal of Poetry Studies and Kishuan Literary Forest jointly organized the "2026 May Fourth Poetry Gathering," which opened yesterday at the Kishuan New Hall. During the gathering, 20 poets and writers came together to recite poetry and pray for the 98-year-old poet Hsiang Ming.

Yang Tsung-han, associate professor of the Department of Chinese Literature and Creative Writing at National Taipei University of Education and host of the poetry gathering, stated in his address that Hsiang Ming is not only an accomplished creator and critic but also a significant promoter of poetry education and movements. He has never ceased writing even in his advanced age, actively expressing his opinions via smartphones and Facebook, and continuously approaching the world with a curious eye.

Yang Tsung-han explained that Hsiang Ming recently fell at home and has been in poor health. His teachers and friends, upon hearing the news, voluntarily decided to offer prayers and blessings through poetry recitation for this esteemed figure in the poetry world.

According to a press release issued by the Taiwan Journal of Poetry Studies, Hsiang Ming, whose real name is Tung Ping, came to Taiwan in 1949 amidst war. He has served as an electronic engineer, editor-in-chief of "Blue Star Poetry Quarterly," editor of the supplement of "China Daily News," editor-in-chief of the annual poetry selections, and director of the New Poetry Society. He is a senior member of the Blue Star Poetry Society and the first president of the Taiwan Journal of Poetry Studies.

The event began with Professor Emeritus Lee Rui-teng of the Department of Chinese Literature at National Central University leading all attendees in reciting his written "Prayer for Poet Hsiang Ming." Subsequently, various poets took to the stage to recite their works, including Hsiao Hsiao's "Walking along Wuxing Street to Lane 600—Giving a Thumbs-Up to Hsiang Ming," Pai Ling's "The First Person to Press a Button and Write Poetry—A Poem for Hsiang Ming," Fang Qun's "Always Guarding the Light of Literature and Art This Way," Chang Kuo-chih's "Useless Poetry One, Two—Echoing Hsiang Ming's Useless Art and Poetry," Wang Ting's "Person Towards Light—To Teacher Hsiang Ming," and Liao Hsien-hao's "Poet Hsiang Ming—To Hsiang Ming."

At the end of the event, Hsiang Ming's daughter, artist Tung Hsin-ju, spoke on behalf of the family, expressing gratitude for the blessings from the participating writers and poets to her father. She stated that she would convey this strength, voices, and images to the beloved poet Hsiang Ming. (Edited by Chen Ching-fang) 1150504
