Central News Agency

(Central News Agency reporter in Seoul, 3rd) North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported today that the North Korean Foreign Ministry rejected claims by the United States that Pyongyang constitutes a cyber threat, stating that they are fabricated out of thin air and intended to justify Washington's long-standing hostile policy.

A spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry stated that the US, for political purposes, is spreading false information about North Korea's 'non-existent cyber threats,' and called the accusations 'nothing more than absurd slanders fabricated to tarnish our nation's image.'

The KCNA reported that the spokesperson warned that Pyongyang would actively take all necessary measures to defend national interests and protect the rights and interests of its citizens in cyberspace.

US officials have repeatedly accused North Korea of engaging in state-sponsored cyber activities, including hacking, cryptocurrency theft, and using a network of overseas IT personnel to obtain funds for its weapons programs.

In March this year, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on six individuals and two entities related to the operations of North Korean IT personnel, stating that they assisted in transferring illicit proceeds through digital assets. US authorities stated that such programs are currently ongoing.

The US Justice Department and the State Department also imposed sanctions on North Korean cyber operatives and foreign facilitators in July last year. The US stated that Pyongyang dispatches thousands of IT personnel overseas and funds its missile and nuclear weapons development through cyber-related theft.

The US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have also warned that North Korean cybercrime groups pose a continuous threat to governments, businesses, and critical infrastructure worldwide. (Editor: Chen Yuting) 1150503
