(Pingtung County, CNA reporter Huang Yu-ching on the 3rd) Pingtung County Government today partnered with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) to host two 'I CAN HELP Disaster Preparedness Basic Training Workshops' at Pingtung County Daitong Senior High School, hoping to strengthen students' disaster response and basic first aid capabilities, with a total of 100 students participating.

Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi stated that in recent years, extreme climate events such as heavy rainfall, heatwaves, and complex disasters have been frequent, coupled with rapid changes in the global situation and intertwining risks, posing higher demands on societal resilience. She pointed out that there is still room for improvement in society's overall immediate response and public self-rescue and mutual assistance capabilities at the frontline; insufficient disaster prevention and relief capabilities will directly affect the extent of disaster damage and life safety, making it urgent to root disaster education in schools.

Chou Chun-mi emphasized that when facing emergencies, three major principles should be grasped: first, confirm one's own safety, stabilize emotions, and correctly judge the situation on site; finally, take safe and effective actions. On-site first aid and wound treatment should not begin only after entering the medical system, but should be activated immediately. Through systematic training and practical drills, students internalize disaster resilience, becoming an important force with response capabilities in future society.

AIT Kaohsiung Branch Chief David J. Zee stated that he was very pleased to work with the Pingtung County Government and Zongkuo Taiwan to promote this training. He shared his own experience: about 50 years ago, his father participated in a similar course in the United States, which enabled him, as a child, to take correct immediate action during a life-threatening situation where he choked on food and could not breathe, successfully saving a life. He emphasized that the popularization of such basic life-saving skills is not only related to personal safety but also a key foundation for enhancing overall societal resilience.

The Pingtung County Government Education Department's press release stated that the opening ceremony, led by Chou Chun-mi and David J. Zee, used a 'Traffic Light of Life' scenario demonstration to guide students in situational assessment, deepening their ability to identify critical situations through simple and intuitive judgment principles, with enthusiastic on-site interaction.

The Education Department stated that this event is centered on the 'I CAN HELP' core concept, combined with the spirit of 'Stay Focused, Save Lives,' emphasizing that in disasters and emergencies, only calm judgment and rapid response can exert the power to protect lives at critical moments. In the future, they will continue to combine international resources and civil forces to deepen the campus disaster prevention education system and strengthen the younger generation's response capabilities in the face of extreme climate and varied risks.
