(Central News Agency, Taipei, May 3 Reporter Wang Baoer) In response to the call for mother tongue living, the Paper Windmill Theatre has planned a Taiwanese Hokkien version of "Shunfeng Er's New Incense Burner" to tour Miaoli, Hualien, and Kaohsiung. The first stop kicked off tonight at Miaoli Baishatun Gongtian Temple, which is also a devotional performance by Paper Windmill, where Mazu even took to the stage during the final curtain call.
Zhang Minyi, CEO of Paper Windmill Education Foundation, stated in a press release today that in January this year, the sedan chair of Baishatun Mazu's Houli branch appeared at the Paper Windmill rehearsal site in Waipu, Taichung. At that time, Mazu paused in front of the stage to watch the rehearsal and lightly touched the stage after the sedan chair was lifted, providing great encouragement to the team. This also fostered the connection between Paper Windmill's 368 Project 'Chair Club' donation plan and the Baishatun devotional performance.
Zhang Minyi said that returning to Baishatun for this performance is like bringing children to thank Mazu, hoping that parents and children can sit down and watch the play with Mazu's company and appreciate the beauty of Taiwanese Hokkien.
Ren Jiancheng, director of the Paper Windmill Theatre, also said that being able to perform at Baishatun Gongtian Temple this time is a destined connection guided by Mazu, and it is also a reminder that "culture must continue to move forward, and children must be protected together."
Miaoli County Magistrate Zhong Dongjin said that Miaoli boasts diverse ethnic cultures and a profound foundation of beliefs, with Baishatun Mazu being a crucial spiritual symbol of the local area. The Paper Windmill Theatre bringing the Taiwanese Hokkien version of "Shunfeng Er's New Incense Burner" to Baishatun is not just a wonderful performance but also a combination of culture, belief, and mother tongue education.
To encourage children and adults to speak Taiwanese Hokkien bravely, the on-site service counter also launched the "Speak Taiwanese Hokkien to Receive Baishatun Gongtian Temple Blessing Card" activity. People only need to say a blessing, greeting, or daily phrase in Taiwanese Hokkien at the service counter to receive a Baishatun Gongtian Temple blessing card, bringing Mazu's blessings home.
The Paper Windmill Theatre announced that on the 9th, they will continue to perform at the parking lot behind Hualien Guangfu Sugar Factory, hoping to bring theater to Hualien, which was affected by the earthquake, and offer blessings and companionship to local residents and children. On the 29th, they will move to the circular plaza of Kaohsiung Cultural Center, inviting more families to join the theater and experience the beauty of their mother tongue.
