Central News Agency
(Central News Agency reporter Su Chih-she, Taipei, May 3) Wei Chuan Dragons infielder Li Kai-wei achieved his 100th career stolen base yesterday, becoming the first homegrown player in team history to reach the century mark. Hearing manager Yeh Chun-chang express optimism about him reaching 150, or even 200, stolen bases, Li Kai-wei chuckled and said, 'Let's not think so far ahead yet.'
Li Kai-wei successfully stole a base in the bottom of the 8th inning yesterday against the Fubon Guardians, becoming the 32nd player in Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) history to achieve 100 stolen bases. In team history, only foreign infielder Bernardo Tatis had previously reached this milestone, doing so in just 135 games, which remains the league's fastest record.
Although quick on his feet, Li Kai-wei admitted he never thought he would achieve 100 stolen bases when he first joined professional baseball. In the early stages, the coaching staff gave him and other young players opportunities to try, and with accumulated experience and his own improved starting mechanics, he only mastered the art of base stealing in the last two years.
Yeh Chun-chang believes 100 stolen bases is not difficult for Li Kai-wei, saying, 'He has speed and can get on base.' He even sees 150 stolen bases as no problem. 'But 200 stolen bases depends on how he maintains his physical condition, because age will increase, and not many people can reach 200 stolen bases.'
Li Kai-wei and teammate Kuo Tien-hsin both achieved 20 stolen bases in their rookie year. This year, Li Kai-wei has already completed 100 stolen bases, while Kuo Tien-hsin has 92, needing 8 more. There is a chance that both could reach 100 stolen bases in the same year again. (Edited by Chen Jen-hua)1150503
