Among them, students from Yangming Junior High found a solution for "hair dye pollution," and students from Rueisiang Senior High focused on male students' "hair donation intentions," both winning first place in the junior high and senior high divisions, respectively.

The Kaohsiung City Education Bureau stated today via press release that the 66th Kaohsiung City Elementary and Middle School Science Exhibition is divided into three groups: elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school. The junior high and elementary school groups cover 8 subjects, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and life and applied sciences, while the senior high group has 12 subjects, offering a complete and diverse range of fields.

This year's entries focused on important issues such as AI smart applications, sustainable development, medical health, and environmental science. After fierce competition in preliminary and复赛 rounds, 39 winning works were selected, including 24 from the elementary and junior high divisions and 15 from the senior high division, which will represent Kaohsiung City in the national science exhibition.

In the junior high division, Huang Zong-you, Liu Zi-qi, and Zhuang Yan-yu from Kaohsiung Municipal Yangming Junior High School, led by their advisor Tsai Rui-qin, participated with their work "Research on Hair Dye Permeation Risk and Fungal Degradation of Wastewater." The students experimented with oyster mushrooms and enoki mushrooms, discovering that fungi have the potential to decompose dyes, with oyster mushrooms being the most effective.

The team ultimately developed an "Oyster Mushroom Activated Carbon Gel Ball Filtration System," which achieved an 87.6% decolorization rate within 48 hours and effectively reduced the mortality rate of water fleas, demonstrating innovative results that balance environmental protection and practical application.

In the senior high division, Luo Meng-zhen and Luo Meng-di from Rueisiang Senior High School won first place in the Behavioral and Social Sciences category with their work "Breaking Gender Stereotypes: The Impact of Public Service Videos on Male High School Students' Hair Donation Intentions." The research explored the psychological factors and social frameworks influencing male high school students' decisions to donate hair, and they actively responded by growing their hair since last year in preparation for donation.

The 66th National Science Exhibition this year is scheduled to be held in Taoyuan from July 13th to July 19th. Kaohsiung City Education Bureau Director Wu Li-sen stated that this year's competing students discovered problems from daily life and proposed solutions through experiments and research, which is the most valuable aspect of science education.
