(Central News Agency reporter Hsieh Chun-lin, Taipei, 3rd) A group brawl occurred in Taipei's Wanhua district last October, during which a man surnamed Li stabbed a man surnamed Liu, who later died after being sent to the hospital. The Taipei District Prosecutors Office indicted Mr. Li, and the court ruled for his detention and restriction of communication. As Mr. Li's detention period was about to expire, the Taipei District Court ruled to extend his detention and restriction of communication for another two months.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office indictment stated that a man surnamed Tu, dissatisfied with rumors regarding e-cigarette pods, had a dispute with two men surnamed Chen. On October 5th last year, he messaged the two men, demanding an explanation. The two men surnamed Chen had another dispute on October 6th and separately gathered several people, including Mr. Tu, Mr. Li, and Mr. Liu, in Kunming Street, Wanhua District, Taipei City.

Late on the night of October 6th last year, the two sides shoved and pulled each other in Kunming Street, leading to a brawl with pepper spray, expandable batons, thermos bottles, helmets, or bare hands. During the process, Mr. Li took out a fruit knife, stabbed a man surnamed Su in the leg, and then stabbed Mr. Liu in the abdomen and chest. Mr. Liu died after being sent to the hospital.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office concluded its investigation on February 2nd and indicted Mr. Li for murder and other crimes. Mr. Li, who was already in custody, was transferred to the Taipei District Court. The judge determined that Mr. Li was heavily suspected of committing the serious crime of murder and there was a risk of flight and colluding with accomplices or witnesses, thus ruling for his detention and restriction of communication. As for Mr. Tu, Mr. Su, one of the men surnamed Chen, and his girlfriend surnamed Lin, they were indicted by the prosecutor for obstruction of public order.

As Mr. Li's detention period was about to expire, the Taipei District Court judge held a hearing with Mr. Li on April 15th, where Mr. Li confessed to the crime. The collegial panel believed that the murder committed by Mr. Li is a serious crime with a minimum sentence of 10 years or more in prison, and there were facts and sufficient reasons to believe there was a risk of flight, colluding with accomplices or witnesses, and therefore determined that detention and restriction of communication were necessary. On April 28th, the court ruled to extend Mr. Li's detention and restriction of communication for two months starting from May 2nd. (Edited by Chang Mingkun) 1150503
