EVA Air to Launch Washington D.C. Direct Flights in June, Targeting Asia-US Transit Market

In terms of passenger sources, Washington D.C. has approximately 327,000 Asian residents as a base. With Southeast Asian travelers able to transit via Taipei, Chung Kai-cheng estimates that transit passengers will account for 40% to 60% of the total. In terms of passenger structure, business, visiting relatives, and leisure travelers are each expected to account for one-third.
Chung Kai-cheng believes that EVA Air's capacity of 98 flights per week has a significant advantage. Through its Star Alliance partnership with United Airlines and Air Canada, it can connect to major transfer centers like San Francisco or Los Angeles on the West Coast, or Chicago and Houston on the East Coast, building a dense network that is highly attractive to business travelers.
The Washington D.C. route will be operated by a Boeing 787-9. Chung Kai-cheng said that due to route restrictions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, flight duration and fuel consumption management have become more challenging. The airline will reduce passenger load to maintain operational efficiency.
Cargo transport is also affected, with capacity adjustments made for 30 to 32 weekly cargo flights to North America to ensure operational flexibility. As Washington D.C.'s import and export cargo mainly consists of high-tech, defense, and medical biotechnology industries, EVA Air will utilize cargo planes and passenger belly holds on its New York route to effectively meet market demand.
Looking ahead at the North American network layout, Chung Kai-cheng stated that in addition to Boston, destinations like Ontario will also be evaluated. Future new destinations will be determined based on market dynamics and fleet capacity.
