(Central News Agency reporter Lin Chiao-lien, Kaohsiung, 2nd) A major fatal traffic accident occurred yesterday in Kaohsiung's Zuoying District, where a driver surnamed Huang, suspected of fatigued driving, struck pedestrians and a motorcycle, causing 2 deaths and 3 injuries. The Transportation Bureau stated that it would immediately conduct an on-site survey to optimize pedestrian passages, signs, and markings at the accident scene and strengthen enforcement against illegal parking.

Yesterday, a man surnamed Huang was driving on Junxiao Road in Kaohsiung City's Zuoying District when he allegedly drove while fatigued, hitting a mother and daughter surnamed Huang, who were tourists in Kaohsiung, and their son-in-law, surnamed Zhang. The incident also affected a motorcyclist and passenger. Ms. Huang and her son-in-law died after being sent to the hospital, resulting in 2 deaths and 3 injuries.

Liu Jian-bang, Deputy Director of the Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau, stated that the Transportation Bureau would not treat this accident merely as an isolated driving incident. It will immediately collaborate with the Police Department and Public Works Bureau to conduct a joint on-site survey at the accident scene to examine whether there is room for optimizing pedestrian passages, lighting, signs, and markings.

In addition, the Police Department will strengthen enforcement against failure to yield to pedestrians, illegal parking affecting pedestrian passage, and obstructions to visibility, to return roads to the public.

Liu Jian-bang stated that the Transportation Bureau is deeply saddened and regretful about this accident. The danger of fatigued driving is no less than that of drunk driving. If drivers feel tired or unwell, they should pull over to a safe place to rest and never force themselves to drive, to avoid irreversible tragedies. (Edited by Chen Jen-hua) 1150502
