(Central News Agency reporter Huang Kuo-Fang, Chiayi City, 2nd) A roofer from Chiayi County, Mr. Wei, did not take a holiday yesterday, Labor Day, and continued to work with an employee on installing metal sheeting for a residential roof. When packing up after work, he accidentally stepped through the roof and fell to the ground, and was pronounced dead after being sent to the hospital. The Chiayi District Prosecutor's Office today conducted an autopsy and initially determined that Mr. Wei's head hitting the ground was the fatal injury, ruling it an accidental death.
Police stated that Mr. Wei, who would turn 65 in October this year, did not take a holiday yesterday, Labor Day, and went with his employee, Mr. Liu, to install metal sheeting on a residential roof in Pizi Village, Xingang Township. Around 5 PM, when the work was largely completed and the two were tidying up their tools, Mr. Liu suddenly heard a loud "bang!" and found that Mr. Wei had apparently stepped through the asbestos tile roof and fallen, lying prone on the ground. He immediately called 119 for emergency medical transport, but Mr. Wei was pronounced dead.
Prosecutors and police today, along with a forensic pathologist, conducted an autopsy. Mr. Wei fell from a height of approximately 5 meters, and it was initially determined that a severe head injury from landing headfirst was the fatal injury, ruling it an accidental incident.
