(Central News Agency reporter Wen Gui-xiang, Taipei, 2nd) President Lai Ching-te stated today that the government is actively promoting the "three arrows of cancer treatment," hoping to reduce the "standardized cancer mortality rate" by one-third before 2030 through enhanced early cancer screening, focusing on genetic testing and precision medicine, and establishing a new cancer drug fund of NT$10 billion.

The Presidential Office today issued a press release stating that President Lai, in a recorded speech for the "30th Taiwan Joint Cancer Conference" this morning, said that the nine major cancer medical associations, through the diverse platform of the "Taiwan Joint Cancer Conference," jointly promote cancer prevention, precision treatment, and the exchange and cooperation of clinical evidence. They have long upheld the spirit of "cross-sector integration and forward-looking innovation," allowing domestic and international professional societies related to oncology, medical institutions, research units, and biotech and pharmaceutical industries to exert greater power together.

The President stated that as Taiwan's first president with a medical background, building a "Healthy Taiwan" is a national vision he is striving to promote. Among them, medical care for cancer is a top priority for realizing "Healthy Taiwan." Therefore, the government has specifically set a goal to reduce the "standardized cancer mortality rate" by one-third before 2030.

The President said that to achieve this goal, the government is actively promoting the "three arrows of cancer treatment," hoping to effectively combat cancer and make the people healthier through enhanced early cancer screening, focusing on genetic testing and precision medicine, and establishing a new cancer drug fund of NT$10 billion.

He said that, first, the national cancer screening service volume last year exceeded 6 million person-times, a significant increase of 25.7% compared to the previous year, helping more than 76,000 people detect and treat cancer early. This year, screening will be further expanded, hoping to help more people receive proper treatment in the early stages of cancer.

Secondly, cancer treatment must move towards precision. The government has gradually included next-generation sequencing (NGS) in health insurance coverage, helping patients precisely match the most appropriate medication and seize the golden treatment period; it has also established a dedicated evaluation center to accelerate the introduction of new drugs, allowing patients to use advanced treatments in line with international standards more quickly, bringing hope to cancer treatment.

Thirdly, the Executive Yuan last year injected NT$5 billion from public funds into the National Health Insurance Fund, specifically designated for "temporary payment for new cancer drugs," benefiting approximately 3,500 patients by including 7 new drugs and 3 expanded indications.

The President stated that this year, an additional NT$5 billion will continue to be injected, gradually fulfilling the commitment of a NT$10 billion new cancer drug fund, with compensation as needed, so that all patients in need can receive proper care.

The President pointed out that the vision of "Healthy Taiwan" requires public-private partnership and cross-disciplinary joint efforts. He once again thanked the "Taiwan Joint Cancer Conference," which annually gathers over 3,000 medical professionals, fostering brainstorming and practical sharing, to strengthen Taiwan's cancer medical and research capabilities to support Taiwan's cancer prevention and control efforts.
