(Central News Agency reporter Huang Yu-ching, Pingtung County, 2nd) The Pingtung Specialty Coffee Bean Competition was held today at Pingtung Original Department Store. A total of 32 coffee beans participated this year, and the Special Selection Award was won by Wangxiang Coffee Estate for the sixth consecutive time. A matching event was held simultaneously for buyers to bid, with the highest price reaching NT$6,000 per kilogram.

The Pingtung County Government held the "2026 Pingtung Specialty Coffee Bean Competition Award Ceremony and Matching Event" today at the Pingtung Original Department Store district. A total of 32 coffee beans from various townships and production areas in Pingtung participated, and a professional judging panel selected outstanding coffee estates for the Special Selection Award, Fine Selection Award, and Excellent Selection Award.

This year's top award, the Special Selection Award, went to Wangxiang Coffee Estate, which not only swept both the washed and other processing categories but also achieved its sixth consecutive win. The winner, Cho Yung-chang, stated in a media interview that his coffee farm is located in Majia Village, Majia Township, at an altitude of 900 to 1200 meters. He cultivates coffee part-time, relying on his father's assistance for farm work such as weeding. The coffee beans are sold on his website and at a coffee shop run by his family, with the entire family mobilized from production to sales.

Cho Yung-chang said that the award-winning coffee beans have elegant flavors such as citrus, peach, and gardenia. He also shared his three key cultivation methods for award-winning coffee: first, choose good-tasting varieties, currently focusing on Geisha coffee beans; second, high altitude, as higher altitudes yield richer flavors; and third, refined post-processing, with the coffee beans specially transported to the Hengchun Peninsula for sun-drying and natural drying.

Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi stated that Pingtung is very fortunate to have indigenous artisan coffee. Coffee cultivation in the indigenous mountain areas can be traced back to the Japanese colonial period, including Wutai Township and Taiwu Township. She often shares coffee beans with friends in northern Taiwan, who praise their unique flavor. This uniqueness comes from the careful cultivation by the indigenous people, grown with warm affection.

In addition to the award ceremony, a specialty coffee bean matching event was held simultaneously, promoting face-to-face exchanges between coffee estates, buyers, and the public through tasting, purchasing, and bidding mechanisms, thereby expanding sales channels and enhancing the value of the local coffee industry. This year, the highest bidding price for coffee beans reached a good price of NT$6,000 per kilogram.

The Council of Indigenous Peoples stated that the competition was subsidized by the central Indigenous Peoples Council. Pingtung's indigenous communities are important coffee producing areas in Taiwan, and the specialty coffee industry has achieved remarkable results in quality improvement and international certification in recent years. This competition adopted the TCAGs grading system, selecting outstanding beans for the Special Selection Award, which not only strengthens product credibility but also helps enhance market competitiveness. It is hoped that Pingtung coffee can steadily move from its origin to the international market, allowing the specialty coffee industry to take root and thrive in indigenous communities.
