Kaohsiung, May 2 (CNA) — A Kaohsiung man surnamed Chen, with a history of drug and theft offenses, who had been released from prison shortly after, worked as an odd job worker at a factory in Daliao District. However, after failing to get money from his employer, surnamed Yang, he broke into the employer's residence with a knife in the middle of the night and injured three members of the family; the Kaohsiung District Court sentenced him to 9 years and 6 months for attempted murder.

During the trial, the Kaohsiung District Court determined that Chen, shortly after being released from prison, did not seek legitimate means of livelihood due to lack of money. Furthermore, Chen and the employer, the Yang couple, had no animosity, and Mr. Yang had never delayed salary payments, even agreeing to an advance. Yet, Chen committed attempted murder and attempted robbery with a knife, severely disrespecting the legal rights of others. Considering Chen's disguise and escape after the crime to evade responsibility, he was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison for aggravated attempted robbery against a minor, threatening safety, and attempted murder. The box cutter involved was confiscated. The case can be appealed.

The first-instance judgment indicated that Chen, 45, had been imprisoned since 2017 for various offenses including theft and drugs. He was released in May 2025 after serving his sentence and subsequently worked as an odd job worker at a factory in Daliao District.

Unexpectedly, on October 27 last year, Chen, after failing to get money from his employer, Mr. Yang, sneaked into the factory around 11 PM with a box cutter. Seeing the employer couple sleeping in a room inside the factory, he directly swung the knife at Mr. Yang's neck. Mr. Yang woke up in pain and tried to block with his bare hands, during which he was cut on his face, shoulder, and palms. Mrs. Yang's palm was also cut.

Mr. Yang's 12-year-old son, to lure Chen out of the room, hit the ground with a baseball bat in the office. Unexpectedly, Chen then began chasing and attacking Mr. Yang's son. Only when Mrs. Yang called the police did Chen quickly escape from the factory. Mr. Yang was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital, where he fortunately survived after rescue. The police later tracked down and arrested Chen. The Kaohsiung District Prosecutor's Office, during investigation, noted that Chen committed the crime again less than 5 months after his release, with escalating methods, indicating a weak concept of law. After concluding the investigation, he was indicted on charges of attempted murder and other crimes, and the Kaohsiung District Court was recommended to impose a heavy sentence.
