Foam Agent Used to Fill Rat Holes Questioned, Taipei City Parks and Recreation Department: Less Likely to Be Dug Open

Taipei City's Shuanglian Market is experiencing a severe rat infestation. The Parks and Recreation Department used foam agents to fill rat holes, but the effectiveness of this method has been questioned by the public due to rats' ability to chew and dig. The department stated that using foam agents with gravel and soil makes it more difficult for rats to dig out compared to simple soil filling, and they will continue patrols.

(Central News Agency reporter Chen Yu-ting, Liu Jian-bang, Taipei 2nd) Taipei's Shuanglian Market has been reported by residents to have a large number of rats active. The Parks and Recreation Department dispatched personnel today to fill rat holes with foam agents and other materials, but the effectiveness was questioned. The Parks and Recreation Department stated that this method is less likely to be dug open by rats compared to simply filling with soil, and they will continue to patrol.

Reports of rats appearing frequently in Taipei City have been circulating recently. A netizen recently posted a video on the social platform Threads, showing more than a dozen rats gathering at Shuanglian Market during the day, "like a zoo," running around happily and unafraid of humans.

Taipei City Councilor Lin Liang-jun of the Democratic Progressive Party posted on Threads today, stating that the Public Works Department's Parks and Street Lights Engineering Management Office had dispatched personnel to the site this morning to deal with the rat burrows by inserting rat poison, blocking them with foam agents, and then filling them with small sections of wooden posts, gravel, and soil.

However, many netizens questioned that rats' skills include gnawing and digging holes, and foam agents are simply not enough to stop them. They also worried that blocking the holes would only cause the rats to run to other places and dig more holes.

The Taipei City Public Works Department's Parks and Street Lights Engineering Management Office explained that eight personnel were dispatched this morning to the linear park next to MRT Shuanglian Station to fill rat holes. After using foam agents, gravel was inserted, and then soil was filled. The foam agent expands to block the internal passages of the rat holes, making it less likely for rats to dig them open compared to simply filling with soil.

The Parks and Recreation Department stated that cleaning work is arranged daily in the linear park, and personnel also conduct irregular inspections. Any dirtiness found is immediately dealt with, and no new rat holes have been found recently. (Editor: Zhang Mingkun) 1150502
