Tainan Female Officer Dies in Collision, Motorcyclist and Bus Driver Charged

Central News Agency (CNA) — Tainan, May 1st, by reporter Chang Jung-hsiang. A female police officer surnamed Zheng from the Tainan City Police Department’s Fourth Precinct was rear-ended by a motorcycle on April 28th, then collided with a tour bus, fell to the ground, and was run over, dying instantly. The Tainan City Police Department’s Third Precinct announced today that the motorcyclist, Ms. Dai, and the tour bus driver, Mr. Jiang, have been charged with negligent homicide.

The Third Precinct informed CNA today that the 20-year-old female university student surnamed Dai and the 40-year-old Mr. Jiang were charged with negligent homicide and released after questioning by the Tainan District Prosecutors Office. As for whether another university school bus at the scene was illegally parked, this awaits traffic accident assessment, but the 66-year-old driver, Mr. Lin, has reported to the scene to explain and has been listed as a person of interest.

Officer Zheng, 28, was riding her motorcycle on Anhe Road Section 2 in Annan District, Tainan City, at around 7 AM on April 28th, when she reportedly encountered traffic slowing down. Ms. Dai, riding her motorcycle, allegedly failed to notice the road conditions ahead and rear-ended Officer Zheng, causing her to shift left, collide with the tour bus, fall, and be run over, dying on the spot.

This case has sparked public debate for several days. Kun Shan University of Technology, where Ms. Dai is a student, issued a statement yesterday calling on all sectors to remain calm and rational.
