(Central News Agency reporter Chiang Yi-ching, Yunlin County, 1st) The National Geriatric Medical and Health Welfare Research Center was inaugurated today. President Lai Ching-te stated that the center will not only make a cross-generational and significant contribution to future elderly health research and overall national health and welfare, but will also advance the national goal of "Healthy Taiwan" by another step.

The National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) held the inauguration ceremony for the National Geriatric Medical and Health Welfare Research Center today. President Lai, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Liu Chien-kuo, former Vice President Chen Chien-jen, NHRI President Sze-tu Hui-kang, and Minister of Health and Welfare Hsueh Jui-yuan attended, witnessing this historic moment.

President Lai stated that the establishment of the National Geriatric Medical and Health Welfare Research Center was not simple, having gone through multiple Ministers of Health and Welfare, Premiers, and National Taiwan University Presidents. "Only one person has not changed, and that is Liu Chien-kuo," because of his persistence, the center is located in Yunlin County, and his efforts did not end with the completion of the building; he was just now concerned about the shortage of manpower.

President Lai believes that research and medical care should be linked to people's lives, because research is not just a research report; it should be able to form national policies. However, when the government promotes it, the project goals should also be integrated with people's lives, not just having policies and action plans. It should solve problems, drive social progress, and enhance people's welfare.

President Lai said that the National Geriatric Medical and Health Welfare Research Center will not only benefit Yunlin and southern Taiwan but also the entire Taiwan. If international cooperation is done well, it can also benefit the international community, which is of great significance.

President Lai pointed out that before former President Tsai Ing-wen took office, the government's annual long-term care budget was only NT$5 billion, but this year it has reached over NT$110 billion. There are over 15,000 long-term care service points across Taiwan, and over 100,000 long-term care workers. Medical care is delivered to communities, to homes, and home hospitalization. In the future, technology will be introduced, hoping that Taiwan, when facing an aging society, will gather social forces and all walks of life to jointly address it, taking good care of the elderly who contribute to the country, society, and families.

President Lai emphasized that in the face of aging, whether it is medical services or long-term care services, or social security and economic security, the government is determined to face and solve them.

Sze-tu Hui-kang explained that the National Geriatric Medical and Health Welfare Research Center has four major significances: the government's determination to integrate domestic resources to face a super-aging society, cross-domain integration experience, translation and implementation, and international alignment, cooperating with elderly institutions in different countries.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the National Geriatric Medical and Health Welfare Research Center was held on August 15, 2022. The construction cost exceeded NT$2.26 billion. It was inaugurated today. The building has one basement level and six above-ground floors. The space design implements elderly-friendly concepts, with two units for day care and small-scale mobile care demonstration areas, piloting innovative care models and intervention services for disabled and demented elderly. In addition, an IoT smart technology display area, talent training classrooms, etc., are set up. (Edited by: Chen Jen-hua) 1150501
