(Central News Agency reporter Guan Rui-ping, Miaoli County, 1st) A pair of black swans at the Hakka Round House Waterfront in the HSR Miaoli Station area nurtured three cygnets. The Houlong Township Office held a naming vote for the black swan family, and the final names, creatively combining Houlong's local snacks, are E Die, Long Hou Li, E Gua Duo, E Ah Jian, and E Le.

Houlong Township Mayor Hsieh Ching-hui stated today that after the Township Office took over the responsibility for environmental maintenance and management of the Beishi River Clear Corridor from the county government last year, they actively tidied up the surrounding water environment of the Hakka Round House and the Clear Corridor. Through Dajiu Rare Poultry Breeding Farm, they received a pair of black swans. This black swan couple brought good news after more than half a year, successfully hatching and nurturing three cygnets early this year.

As the three cygnets grew steadily, the Township Office held a cute cygnet naming vote during the Spring Arts and Cultural Series activities. From over 80 sets of names, the top 5 entered the final selection. After on-site voting, good names were chosen for the black swan family.

Hsieh Ching-hui said that the naming vote results were based on Houlong's local snacks, agricultural products, and interesting homophones. The final names for the five-member black swan family are: the father swan is named "E Die" (Taiwanese: Oyster omelet); the mother swan is named "Long Hou Li"; and the three cygnets are "E Gua Duo" (Houlong agricultural products: watermelon, melon), "E Ah Jian" (local snack), and "E Le" (Taiwanese for praise).

The Houlong Township Office pointed out that in addition to the black swan family, the water areas of the Hakka Round House and Beishi River Clear Corridor currently have other charming guests such as Call Ducks and Mandarin Ducks continuously moving in, adding more liveliness and warmth to the waterfront scenery.

Fan Chin-hsuan, the owner of Dajiu Rare Poultry Breeding Farm who originally donated the black swans, said that visitors might find the father swan following people, "but that's actually a warning behavior." He explained that black swans are very territorial, and to protect their cygnets, if visitors get too close, they will raise their neck feathers and spread their wings to appear larger, aiming to intimidate. Therefore, it is best to keep a distance when observing black swans to avoid danger and disturbing the black swan family. (Editor: Lee Hsi-chang) 1150501
